July 15, 2010:-
Road Show made its first stop at the WGBS in Cape Coast. Students from primary 4
and 5 were taken through a one hour basketball and exercise section. The
activity started at 6:30AM Local Time so that it does not intervene with the
normal class schedule. The students, all girls came in their numbers numbering
around forty. They were taken through basketball drills such as Over head pass,
Bounce pass, Chest pass, Dribbling the basketball, Shooting the basketball. They
also went through exercise routines. After the basketball section, the students
and HCI staffs went to the school where all the children were assembled for
their normal morning devotion before classes. There they were given motivational
speeches by Priscilla Edwards from the Saint Bonaventure University in the USA
and Coach Daniel Apaak, basketball coach of the University of Cape Coast, both
whom are also Senior Members of Hoops Care International. The children were told
to take their education seriously and to also participate actively in sports.
Miss. Edwards told the attentive students that through basketball she was able
to secure scholarships from high school to university levels. She urge that they
are the future leaders and should therefore live a good example for others to
follow. Coach Apaak on his part to the students that he was hoping that most of
them will take into sports, not necessarily basketball, and that the university,
when the time comes will be looking to issue local scholarships to deserving
student athletes. Both senior members of HCI on behalf of the organization
presented two basketballs and ten mosquito nets. The balls are to help the PE
masters continue the basketball training of the girls while the nets will be
given to students who the school identify as most needed. The headmistress of
the school thanks HCI for its kind gesture and asked that regular road trips be
made so that the children can improve in the game and the school can have a
basketball team of its own. She also stated that most of the girls are from
fishing communities yet the school has been able to pass 100% in the Basic
Education Certificate Examinations. The children where than told about the
methods of prevention of malaria, mainly by using insecticide treated
nets. They were taken through the process of opening and installing a net but
the HCI staff present. The students were encourage to keep their surrounding
clean to avoid breeding ground of mosquitoes. We are certain this message has
gone through these sharp ladies minds. The basketball clinics will continue
while a time to be decided will be arrange for the PE master to go through
basketball coaching clinic to be able to build the school team. A shootin'
"Nothing but NETS" Club will be establish in the school to continue the
spreading of the message on good health, preventing malaria and participation in
