 "Nothing But NETS:” is a campaign  programme initiative which seeks to promote the use of treated mosquito nets to control malaria.

  The programme offers service to Basic Schools, Senior High Schools, Orphanages, Communities etc. 

 

  THE STAGES INVOLVE

 

  There are five stages which seeks to take participants through activities such as maintaining good health, promoting physical education, good morals and participation in sports.

3. Tournaments

4. Finals

shootin' "Nothing but NETS" Road Show goes to Wesley Girls Basic School

 

July 15, 2010:- Road Show made its first stop at the WGBS in Cape Coast. Students from primary 4 and 5 were taken through a one hour basketball and exercise section. The activity started at 6:30AM Local Time so that it does not intervene with the normal class schedule. The students, all girls came in their numbers numbering around forty. They were taken through basketball drills such as Over head pass, Bounce pass, Chest pass, Dribbling the basketball, Shooting the basketball. They also went through exercise routines. After the basketball section, the students and HCI staffs went to the school where all the children were assembled for their normal morning devotion before classes. There they were given motivational speeches by Priscilla Edwards from the Saint Bonaventure University in the USA and Coach Daniel Apaak, basketball coach of the University of Cape Coast, both whom are also Senior Members of Hoops Care International. The children were told to take their education seriously and to also participate actively in sports. Miss. Edwards told the attentive students that through basketball she was able to secure scholarships from high school to university levels. She urge that they are the future leaders and should therefore live a good example for others to follow. Coach Apaak on his part to the students that he was hoping that most of them will take into sports, not necessarily basketball, and that the university, when the time comes will be looking to issue local scholarships to deserving student athletes. Both senior members of HCI on behalf of the organization presented two basketballs and ten mosquito nets. The balls are to help the PE masters continue the basketball training of the girls while the nets will be given to students who the school identify as most needed. The headmistress of the school thanks HCI for its kind gesture and asked that regular road trips be made so that the children can improve in the game and the school can have a basketball team of its own. She also stated that most of the girls are from fishing communities yet the school has been able to pass 100% in the Basic Education Certificate Examinations. The children where than told about the methods of prevention  of malaria, mainly by using insecticide treated nets. They were taken through the process of opening and installing a net but the HCI staff present. The students were encourage to keep their surrounding clean to avoid breeding ground of mosquitoes. We are certain this message has gone through these sharp ladies minds. The basketball clinics will continue while a time to be decided will be arrange for the PE master to go through basketball coaching clinic to be able to build the school team. A shootin' "Nothing but NETS" Club will be establish in the school to continue the spreading of the message on good health, preventing malaria and participation in sports.
